Christchurch is the largest city in New Zealand's South Island; a gateway to the south. Around 370,000 people call Christchurch home. It is said that people first settled in the area around 1,000 years ago.

Industry in Christchurch the area began with agriculture and the processing of wool and meat, seed development, dairy farming and growing crops. More recently, the technology industries have started to play a part. Tourism in the area has also developed; Christchurch is one of the few places in the world where you can go skiing, whale watching and try bungee jumping all within two hours of the international airport. Christchurch is also a stopover destination for many tourists.
The area is served by Christchurch International Airport. Once in Christchurch there are long distance and local buses to help you get around, as well as trains. Cars are the primary method of transport and offer an easy way to see the city. You can hire a car when arriving at the airport to facilitate your adventuring. Cycling is also popular in Christchurch, and is known as New Zealand's cycling city. To get your bearings it is worth taking a trip on the tram which does a loop of the city centre.
The main festival in Christchurch is the Christchurch Arts Festival which plays host to theatre shows, music, dancing, a circus and cabaret performers. There is also the Festival of Cycling held at the nearby Waipara, which has various cycling challenges, mountain biking and family events.
Lovers of sport will feel right at home in Christchurch with a variety to choose from including rugby, football, basketball and ice hockey. Water sports are of course popular giving locals and visitors the chance to try waterskiing, windsurfing, kayaking and banana boats.
The AMI Stadium does not just host sporting events, but concerts are also held here. Performers who have appeared include Tina Turner, Meat Loaf and Bonjovi.
There are many other sights to see in Christchurch which include the Christchurch Cathedral, Canterbury Museum, the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve and the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
Well known people born on the island include the actress Michelle Ang who appears on the daytime show 'Neighbours', and 'Lord of the Rings' Director Peter Jackson.
