Belo Horizonte tourist information
Belo Horizonte is the sixth largest city in Brazil, nicknamed beagá (translating as 'BH') by the locals, the city's name translates as 'beautiful horizon'. A name well deserved with the city built across a series of hills and surrounded by the Espinhaço Mountains.
The Minas Gerais region is famous for the production of cachaça (distilled sugar cane), a signature ingredient in the Brazilian cocktail, Caipirinha. Perhaps unsurprisingly the city is widely known for its popular bars, indeed the city has more bars per capita than anywhere else in Brazil.
The city is also a hub for Mineira cuisine including pão de queijo (a cheese bun) and feijão tropeiro (cattleman's beans). It is also host to a large food area called Mercado Central where a market and several of the city's most popular restaurants are based.
At the centre of Belo Horizonte is Praça da Liberdade, the city's cultural hub, home to several museums, while a few blocks further north the Palácio das Artes is a huge arts complex home to several galleries and an important venue for dance, music and theatre performances from across the country.
