Sharm El Sheikh is famous for a number of reasons, one of which is that the area is one of the best sites for diving as it has beautiful coral reefs. The area has a bustling tourist industry but it does not rely on tourism alone with agriculture playing an important role in the local economy.
The city was a disputed territory between Israel and Egypt for much of the 20th century. It was during Israel's occupation of the 1950s that Sharm El Sheikh moved beyond being a port town used mainly by fishermen, acquiring other commercial and private business developments in a bid to boost the economy.
Sharm El Sheikh hosts many annual festivals, including the world famous International Shopping and Tourism Festival. This festival takes place in July, with many of the local shops and restaurants offering customers discounts. Another of the annual events is the International Camel Competition which is held in April; camels are raced against each other to be crowned the fastest camel in Sinai.
The most popular sports in the area are water sports, mainly because the water is crystal clear and lovely and warm. Tourists and locals have the option of diving, snorkelling and wind surfing amongst other activities.
Tourist attractions include the Ras Mohammed National Park which is the most famous park in Egypt and one of the best diving areas in the world. Head to the Aqua Blu Sharm water park in Sharm El Sheikh and let the children cool off after a busy day sightseeing. There is even a bakery, cafes and a supermarket there.
