Cairo tourist information
Take a trip up to the Cairo Tower which is the tallest building in Egypt and offers panoramic views across the city. While you are there take advantage of the restaurant which actually revolves around the tower. Visit the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo and discover items from the past 7000 years. The museum is home to more than 100,000 artefacts, many of which actually belonged to King Tutankhamun.
The most famous of Cairo's festivals is its International Film Festival which runs for 10 days in various different venues. The first film festival took place in 1976 and they have occurred every year since. Many world-famous stars have visited over the years including Elizabeth Taylor, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich.
The most popular sport in Cairo, and indeed Egypt is football. Two of the most well-known teams are Al-Ahly and El Zamalek. The city has several teams which take part in local and national leagues. Cairo has its own international stadium which is Egypt's second-largest stadium.
As well as Cairo's international airport, the city has a substantial network of roads, railways and subways. Transport via the roads consists of cars, taxis and buses. The most efficient way of getting around the city is the Metro system and there is also a tram service. The roads link Cairo with many of the other towns and villages that surround the city.
Many well-known faces have been born in Cairo but possibly the most famous has to be the novelist Naguib Mahfouz, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988.
