Network Weather Resilience (NWR)

What is Network Weather Resilience (NWR)?

NWR is a web portal which combines Met Office aviation data information with weather map data. The aim of NWR is to enable access to consistent UK met data for all stakeholders (airlines, airports and ATM) operating within UK airspace to optimise weather impact decision-making. This is being made available free-at-point-of-use, under the Met Office’s regulated remit, in agreement with the CAA.

Benefits

Features

Consistent information is available to all stakeholders in the air traffic system.

Navigational map

Valuable time can be freed up to focus on other tasks, by creating a watch list of priority or challenging airports/aerodromes.

Web Map Services (WMS) Weather Layers

Minimise the impact of weather on operations by communicating changes to all within an organisation when they occur, using in-built notification alerts based on bespoke thresholds.

Watch List (METAR/TAF monitoring)

Take advantage of early contingency planning, real-time data allows more informed decisions based on the most recent forecasts and observations.

Weather Forecast Products) – LVP matrix and CB/TS forecast PDF reports

More effective weather impact decision making is enabled using map layers (such as RADAR and satellite imagery) helping to identify areas which could be more adversely affected.

Airport List, to tailor location data on the map

Minimise reputational impact by providing customers with advance notification of delays or cancellations using real-time data to avoid unnecessary journeys.

How to register for Network Weather Resilience (NWR)

1. Check your organisation's eligibility

Please check internally to see if your organisation already has access or if the setup has been completed before proceeding further

NWR is intended for:

  • UK airlines
  • Global airlines operating in UK airspace
  • UK Air Traffic Management (ATM)
  • UK airports
  • Global airports with connecting or destination flights in the UK

If unsure, contact [email protected].

2. Read our Statement of Operational Use and complete our online form to register your organisation.

To gain access to NWR, your organisation must be approved by providing the intended service email address, the designated superuser's email, and an optional back-up superuser's email, all using your organisation's domain (e.g., [email protected]); personal email addresses are not accepted.

The superuser will have administration rights to set up NWR for your organisation’s network, including map set up with the airport data you need and threshold set up for RED/AMBER highlighting. It is useful to have another person acting as a back-up superuser should changes need to be applied to your organisation’s set up of NWR.

Superusers will usually fulfil the following job roles

  • Airports - Operations

  • Airlines - Dispatch and flight operations

  • Air Traffic Management - Airspace capacity management

Please note, if your organisation has already been set-up and superusers already identified the Met Office will not be able to process requests for additional superusers without the permission/removal of the existing superusers. Please contact the superusers within your organisation if you think you should be granted superuser access to NWR. They will then need to contact 0370 900 0100 or use the contact form opposite to inform the Met Office of the changes.

After registration, you will receive a confirmation email to proceed with creating an account, find how to do this below

3. Create a Met Office NWR Account

IMPORTANT: You must register a new account with an email address in all lowercase letters, for example: [email protected]

Once step one has been completed, create a Met Office NWR account by using the 'Create a Met Office account' button on the log in page.

Click here to view our step-by-step guide on how to create an account

4. Log in to the Network Weather Resilience portal

Once superusers have created an account, they should log in and set up the NWR preferences (airports and thresholds) as soon as possible for their organisation, see our resources page below for more information

Once these changes have been made, all general users can then create an account and log in.

Technical specification

NWR has been primarily developed for Google Chrome, but will also support Firefox, Safari and Edge web browsers. Support is also available for a range of devices, including desktop, iPhone and Android mobile and tablet devices. If you experience any problems, please complete the contact form opposite.
