Met Office weather: Bright start to the week for most with temperatures on the rise

Monday kicks off with a mix of weather conditions across the country, with northern areas experiencing a cloudy and breezy day, with outbreaks of rain primarily affecting northwest Scotland. However, those in sheltered eastern areas can look forward to some bright spells.

Elsewhere, the weather will be fine, with plenty of sunshine breaking through after early fog patches in the south clear. Temperatures will be near average in the northwest, but it will be warm or even very warm in other areas.

Monday evening will see the far north remain cloudy with some rain or drizzle. The rest of the country will enjoy dry conditions with clear spells. However, rural areas may see a few mist or shallow fog patches as temperatures turn chilly.

Outlook for Tuesday

Tuesday brings a continuation of the mixed weather. The far north will see some cloud and early rain or drizzle, but the rest of the country will be dry and sunny. Temperatures will rise, becoming widely warm or very warm, although coastal areas may feel slightly cooler due to developing sea breezes.

Overnight and into Wednesday, some cloud will affect the Northern Isles, but mostly dry and clear elsewhere. The odd fog patch may develop, particularly in low-lying rural areas, where it will turn chilly. However, areas to the lee of hills and mountains will stay mild or even exceptionally mild.

Jonathan Vautrey, Met Office presenter and meteorologist, said: “We do have a cold front across the far north of Scotland first thing Monday morning, so it is quite damp there. Outbreaks of rain for the Highlands and parts of the outer Hebrides, eventually over towards Orkney as well.

“Elsewhere, there'll be plentiful amounts of sunshine developing particularly across England and Wales once any early mist and fog does lift its way off. Skies will be brightening into the afternoon, particularly for Northern Ireland, central and southern Scotland as well. Temperatures generally ranging between 18°C and 24°C so already starting to see things warm up.

“The band of rain in the north will slowly continue its journey into Monday evening and overnight, eventually heading towards Shetland before the early hours of Tuesday morning. Elsewhere though it's a fine evening to come and staying dry. Again, there'll be some mist and fog patches developing in places, with temperatures in some rural spots dropping down to around mid or low single figures, but most of us should see those values holding up generally around 8°C to 10°C, so not too chilly of a start to the morning.”
