Somalia and South Sudan - WISER support for priority sectors
The purpose of this project was to reduce the impact of weather and climate shocks in Somalia and South Sudan through enhanced provision of weather and climate information services to priority sectors.
Co-production supported the generation, delivery and use of climate information services by various users in Somalia and South Sudan.
This project was being led by IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), who are working with project partners the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), CARE Somalia, the Met Office, the International Research Institute for Climate & Society (IRI) and the national meteorological services of Somalia and South Sudan.
Priority users of climate information services were identified by the project and engaged to understand their needs and expectations of the national meteorological services. This information was then used in the co-production of relevant weather and climate services.
Meteorological service employees were provided with the necessary technology to enable use of climate model outputs and receive training in the interpretation of this data. IRI also supported the improvement of data availability.
The project also developed an outreach strategy and implement research at local level, harmonising approaches across humanitarian and development sectors in South Sudan.
