Build planetary-scale applications in the cloud
Meteorological data reusers now have an exciting opportunity to sample, experiment and evaluate Met Office atmospheric model data.
UK MET Office atmospheric deterministic and probabilistic forecasts are now available in the cloud, so you can build planetary-scale applications using open atmospheric model data.
At the same time you can experience a transformative method of requesting data via Restful APIs from AWS. All this is available ahead of the Met Office’s own operationally supported API platform that will be launched in late 2019.
What NWP model data is available?
The following models are available on AWS for research and evaluation purposes.
Met Office UK Atmospheric Hi-Res Model (UKV) - 2km Deterministic
Met Office Global Atmospheric Hi-Res Model - 10km Deterministic
Met Office Global and Regional Ensemble Prediction System (UK) MOGREPS-UK
Met Office Global and Regional Ensemble Prediction System (Global) - MOGREPS-G
NB Data has a 24 hour latency & limited selectability
What is the latency and retention period for the data?
Data has a 24 hour latency, with 7 days retention.
What data selection is available?
Data selection is limited.
Met Office deterministic Global & UKV atmospheric models:
One file = one parameter, one timestep, all vertical levels (of one type e.g. all pressure levels OR all height levels)
Met Office probabilistic models:
MOGREPS-G - as above plus 18 members per file
MOGREPS-UK - as above plus 12 members per file.
*Please note that the Met Office strongly recommends the combination of the latest two runs to provide a time-lagged ensemble.
What does the license include?
The data is available under Creative Commons license (Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 International).
This allows users to
1. reproduce and share the licensed material, in whole or in part, for non commercial purposes only; and
2. produce and reproduce, but not share, adapted material for non commercial purposes only.
What support is available?
The data is not available with any support. A GitHub repository is available as a collaborative area, where you can see example code, raise issues and interact with other users and ask/answer technical and science questions.
What is MOGREPS?
MOGREPS-UK is a high resolution weather forecast covering the United Kingdom, whilst MOGREPS-G is a global weather forecast.
MOGREPS is primarily designed to aid the forecasting of rapid storm development, wind, rain, snow and fog.
