Aircraft Meteorological DAta Relay (AMDAR)

The project was delivered by a public private partnership between the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) and Kenya Airways (KQ).

The WMO AMDAR observing system (a sub-system of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System and the Global Observing System, which is defined and maintained under the WMO World Weather Watch Programme) uses the aircraft’s existing sensors, avionics and telecommunications system to gather, process and disseminate data that is used directly to improve the accuracy of weather forecasting services and applications. The high quality data will be used by KMD to improve weather services to aviation and public weather applications that meet sector-specific needs.

Key deliverables include:

  • The development and establishment of the key components for operation of the system, both within the aircraft and on the ground.
  • Support for the operation of the programme over a three-year period.
