We and our funders commission and conduct economic research and evaluations in line with HM Treasury guidance to show that spend on the Met Office provides value for money for the taxpayer.
The value of the Hadley Centre Climate Programme

This evaluation into the value of the Met Office Hadley Centre Climate Programme (HCCP) 2018-2021 concluded that:
• the HCCP has significantly enhanced the understanding of climate change within UK industry and government at all levels; and
• delivers a return on investment of £33 per £1 of public money invested.

This research updates work undertaken in 2015 and estimates that the Met Office will, over the next decade, deliver:
- £56 billion of benefit to the UK economy and society; and
- a return on investment of almost £19 per £1 of public money.
The value of the Met Office Public Weather Service to the General Public

This study concluded that, on average, individuals are willing to pay between £20 and £23 per year for the Met Office Public Weather Service (PWS). Based on this, the total annual value of the Met Office PWS to the UK public in 2024 is estimated to be more than £1 billion.
