The inshore waters forecast issued by the Met Office, on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency

For coastal areas up to 12 miles offshore from Wednesday 17 March 2010 at 0000 until Thursday 18 March 2010 at 0000

General Situation at 0000 on Wed 17 Mar 2010
A ridge of high pressure over the United Kingdom will move southeastwards across the Continent. An increasing southerly or southwesterly airflow will develop on Wednesday and Thursday, with Atlantic fronts crossing most areas.

Cape Wrath to Rattray Head including Orkney - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southerly or southwesterly 3 or 4, increasing 5 or 6, occasionally 7 later in northwest. Slight or moderate, becoming rough in northwest. Fair, then rain or drizzle. Moderate or good, occasionally poor.
Outlook:  Southerly or southwesterly, backing southeasterly, 5 or 6, occasionally 7 at first in northwest. Slight or moderate, but rough becoming moderate in northwest. Rain or drizzle, then squally showers later. Moderate or good, occasionally poor.

Rattray Head to Berwick on Tweed - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: South or southwest 3 or 4, increasing 5 or 6. Slight occasionally moderate near Rattray Head. Fair, then rain for a time. Moderate or good, but poor for a time.
Outlook:  South or southwest 5 or 6. Slight occasionally moderate later. Mainly fair, then rain later. Moderate or good, occasionally poor later.

Berwick on Tweed to Whitby
24 hour forecast: South or southwest 4 or 5. Slight but moderate at first in south. Fair, then rain for a time. Good, occasionally moderate.
Outlook:  South or southwest 4 or 5, increasing 5 or 6. Slight occasionally moderate later. Fair, then rain later. Good, occasionally moderate.

Whitby to Gibraltar Point
24 hour forecast: South or southwest 3 or 4, increasing 4 or 5. Slight but moderate at first in north. Mainly fair. Good, occasionally moderate.
Outlook:  South or southwest 4 or 5, increasing 5 or 6. Slight occasionally moderate later. Mainly fair, then rain later. Good, occasionally moderate.

Gibraltar Point to North Foreland
24 hour forecast: Southwesterly 3 or 4, increasing 5 for a time later. Smooth or slight. Fair. Moderate or good.
Outlook:  Southwesterly 3 or 4, backing southerly 4 or 5, increasing 5 or 6 later. Smooth or slight, occasionally moderate later. Fair, then rain later. Good becoming moderate, occasionally poor later.

North Foreland to Selsey Bill
24 hour forecast: Southeasterly veering southerly or southwesterly 3 or 4, increasing 5 for a time later. Smooth becoming slight. Fog patches at first near shore, otherwise fair. Moderate or good, occasionally very poor at first.
Outlook:  Southerly or southwesterly 3 or 4, increasing 4 or 5, then increasing 5 or 6 later. Smooth or slight, occasionally moderate in west. Fair, then rain or drizzle later. Good becoming moderate or poor.

Selsey Bill to Lyme Regis
24 hour forecast: South, veering southwest for a time, 3 or 4. Smooth becoming slight or moderate. Mainly fair. Moderate or good, occasionally poor later.

Lyme Regis to Lands End including the Isles of Scilly - Strong winds are forecast

Lands End to St Davids Head including the Bristol Channel - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southeasterly veering southerly 4 or 5, but 6 at first and later in west. Slight or moderate, but smooth for a time in Bristol Channel. Rain or drizzle for a time later. Moderate or good, occasionally poor later.
Outlook:  South veering southwest 4 or 5, increasing 6 or 7, perhaps gale 8 for a time later near st david's head. Slight or moderate, becoming rough occasionally very rough later in west. Mainly fair, rain or drizzle for a time. Moderate or good occasionally poor.

St Davids Head to Great Ormes Head including St Georges Channel - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southerly or southwesterly 4 or 5, occasionally 6 in west. Slight or moderate, occasionally rough later around St Davids Head. Fair, then rain or drizzle. Good becoming moderate or poor.
Outlook:  Southerly or southwesterly 4 or 5, increasing 6 or 7, perhaps gale 8 for a time later. Slight or moderate, becoming rough later in west. Occasional rain or drizzle, fair later. Moderate occasionally poor, becoming good later.

Great Ormes Head to Mull of Galloway - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southerly 4 or 5, occasionally 6 in south, but 3 for a time around Liverpool Bay. Slight or moderate, but smooth for a time in south. Fair, then occasional rain or drizzle. Good becoming moderate or poor.
Outlook:  Southerly 4 or 5, veering southwesterly 5 to 7, perhaps gale 8 later in south. Slight or moderate, occasionally rough later in north. Occasional rain or drizzle, fair later. Moderate occasionally poor, becoming good later.

Isle of Man - Strong winds are forecast

Ardnamurchan Point to Cape Wrath excluding The Minch - Strong winds are forecast

The Channel Islands

Outlook:  Southeast to south 4 to 5 veering south to southwest increasing 5 to 6 in the afternoon, decreasing 4 to 5 later. Slight to moderate becoming moderate to rather rough in the north. Rain or drizzle from early to mid-afternoon. Good, locally moderate to poor later.
