Gareth Dow
Gareth works with data assimilation development for the 1.5 km hi-res UK model, aiming to improve forecasts of key weather elements such as rain, cloud, visibility, screen temperature and 10-metre wind
Areas of expertise
- Assimilation of observations into
forecast models - Running and assessing forecast trials
with data assimilation.
Current activities
Gareth is a scientist working on data assimilation. This involves developing, testing and implementing improvements to the way we assimilate weather observations into high resolution limited area (UK) forecast models.
One particular area of interest for Gareth is the assessment of the impact of increasing the spatial and temporal volume of observational data entering the high-res UK models from both conventional and innovative sources.
Career background
Gareth joined the Met Office in 2002, working in Observation Monitoring which involved statistical quality monitoring of observations presented to the assimilation system. In 2005 he completed his MSc in Meteorology at the University of Reading and in 2006 he moved to his current post in Convective-Scale NWP.
