Met Office and University of Exeter

Met Office

For more than a decade climate change scientists from the Met Office Hadley Centre have been researching scenarios and using this research to advise Government. Now we are seeing some of these scenarios occurring, and as a result the Met Office is increasingly working in the areas of adaptation and mitigation rather than just prediction.

University of Exeter

University of Exeter

The University of Exeter aims to invest £80m over the next three years in Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine. One of the key investment areas will be climate change and sustainable futures. This investment will enhance the strengths of the University in climate change impacts and socio-economic interactions, particularly in the areas of health, policy and regulation, behavioural change and environmental economics, creating a uniquely broad interdisciplinary perspective.

Advancing climate science together

Climate change is a complex subject and there are genuine areas of uncertainty and scientific controversy, now the Met Office and University of Exeter are working together to tackle and investigate some of the issues surrounding climate science.

The project

Together we are developing a clear and shared vision for the future of research into climate observations, modelling, predictions and impacts of climate change.

With both the Met Office Hadley Centre's and the University's extensive research links across the world, Exeter has an unrivalled opportunity to become a global centre for climate change research. We intend to work together to shape the UK research funding agenda, attract other partners and prepare the ground for initial joint proposals to build our vision.

Our joint priority is to establish a major, multidisciplinary research initiative which will analyse and translate climate change scenarios into effective policy development and improved understanding of impacts on human health, well-being and economic success in a sustainable future.
