Online training for winter road services

We offer two self-led courses: Weather Basics and Using the Opensite™ forecast service. 

Weather basics training for winter services and gritting operators 

Online training course providing road maintenance staff with an introduction to weather principles and their impacts on road surfaces. Enrol today and be better informed when making operational decision around winter services. 

Delivery: The course consists of a 1–2-hour online module and knowledge check. This course is self-led and can be completed at any time, with progress saved throughout. Once activated, the participant has three months to complete the course.

Designed for: Highway engineers, gritting operators, road workers, drivers, senior managers and consultants. 

Price: £125.00 per licence (VAT exempt). 

After completing this course, you will be able to: 

  • Recognise the risks presented to highway/car park users because of winter weather and identify the reasonable measures required to mitigate these conditions
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the different types of ice and how they affect the highway/car park, and in particular how hoar frosts can be identified on weather systems
  • Identify the non-weather factors that can alter the level of treatment required

Certification is provided on completion. 

Using the OpenSite™ Forecast service  

Learn about the OpenSite™ Forecast service to maximise operations and knowledge around site-specific gritting.   

Delivery: The course consists of a 1–2-hour online module and knowledge check. This course is self-led and can be completed at any time, with progress saved throughout. Once activated, the participant has three months to complete the course.

Designed for: Individuals who focus their operations on site-specific management. 

Price: The total price for this course is £125.00 per licence (VAT exempt). 

After completing the course, you will be able to: 

  • Make more informed site treatment decisions
  • Interpret weather information within a site-specific forecast 
  • Understand the risk of weather-related impacts on different types of sites
  • Identify potential hazards when undertaking site survey visits and planning site treatments
  • Understand other considerations to factor into the management of a particular site 

Certification is provided on successful completion of the online test at the end of the training course.
